How Many Correct Answers Do You Need?
| Module | Correct answers (out of 40) |
|---|---|
| Listening | ~30 |
| Reading — Academic | ~30 |
| Reading — General Training | ~32–34 |
These are estimates based on typical published conversion tables, not an official fixed number — IELTS adjusts the exact conversion slightly for each test date to keep difficulty consistent. Writing and Speaking aren't included here since they're scored against band descriptors, not a correct-answer count — see our full Band 7 requirements guide for those.
Why Isn't There One Fixed Number?
Every IELTS test date uses a new set of passages and recordings with slightly different difficulty, so a raw score of 30/40 might convert to Band 7 on one test and Band 6.5 or 7.5 on another. IELTS adjusts the conversion table for each version specifically to keep band scores comparable across different test dates — which is also why practicing under real timed conditions matters more than memorizing a single "magic number" of correct answers.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many correct answers do I need in Listening for Band 7?
Approximately 30 out of 40 correct answers, based on typical published conversion tables — though the exact figure can vary by 1–2 marks between different test versions.
How many correct answers do I need in Academic Reading for Band 7?
Approximately 30 out of 40 correct answers, similar to Listening, though Academic Reading's conversion table is very slightly stricter on some test versions.
How many correct answers do I need in General Training Reading for Band 7?
Slightly more than Academic — typically around 32-34 out of 40 correct — since General Training texts are generally considered less difficult, so the conversion table demands a higher raw score for the same band.
Does this apply to Writing and Speaking too?
No — Writing and Speaking don't have a 'correct answers out of 40' structure. They're scored by examiners against detailed band descriptors instead. See our guide on Band 7 requirements for what that looks like in those two modules.
Are these numbers exact and guaranteed?
No. IELTS uses a fresh conversion table for each test administration to keep difficulty consistent across versions, so the exact raw score needed for Band 7 can shift by a question or two from one test date to another. These figures are reliable estimates based on typical published tables, not an official guarantee.
