IELTS Band Descriptors Explained: What Each Band Actually Means

IELTS bands run from 0 to 9, and each whole band has a specific, official description of what a test-taker at that level can actually do. Understanding these descriptors — not just the number — is what helps you see exactly what separates your current band from your target one.
What Does Each IELTS Band Score Mean?

| 6 | Competent User | Generally effective command despite some inaccuracies; can use and understand fairly complex language, especially in familiar situations. |
| 5 | Modest User | Partial command, coping with overall meaning in most situations, though likely to make many mistakes. |
| 4 | Limited User | Basic competence limited to familiar situations; frequent problems in understanding and expression. |
Why Is Band 6 to Band 7 So Hard?
Most students plateau exactly here. Band 6 rewards "generally effective" communication — you can be understood despite mistakes. Band 7 requires those mistakes to become occasional rather than frequent, and it starts rewarding more complex, natural-sounding language rather than simple, correct sentences. It's less about learning new grammar rules and more about tightening accuracy under exam pressure.
Are All 4 IELTS Modules Scored the Same Way?
The table above shows the overall band scale, but Speaking and Writing are actually scored against four separate criteria each (for example, Writing looks at Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Vocabulary, and Grammar separately), while Listening and Reading are scored by counting correct answers out of 40 questions and converting that to a band. This is exactly why two students with the same overall band can have very different strengths — one might be strong in Reading but weaker in Speaking, for example.
